Artist Statement
’My glass work is inspired by the landscape, the play of positive and negative space and simple, often overlooked, familiar things. I use the vessel because I like its tradition in glass and the familiar associations people have with it.

Mostly I work with flattened blown shapes because of this interesting blurring that happens between the 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional.  I have become increasingly interested in the way light defines and moves through objects and the spaces between.’

Technical Process:
’All of my work starts with lots of drawing and I will map out the piece I want to make on paper first.

I make a 'blank' using a technique called a 'colour overlay'. This is where I make a coloured cup and fill this cup with a clear glass bubble. From here I blow and shape the bubble to the desired shape I want.

So the piece is annealed and then taken to the coldshop where I map out the design directly on the piece. I then carve through the uppermost colour exposing the clear glass underneath using diamond and stone wheels. This is a process which takes many hours and the stone finishing itself can take 6 - 10 hours.'
