PHILADELPHIA-On the second floor, Wexler Gallery will host an exhibition of recent works by master Japanese ceramicist Hideaki Miyamura. Show runs December 2, 2011 – February 25, 2012. An opening reception will take place on First Friday, December 2, from 5-8pm.

 Well known throughout Japan and the United States for his experimental and illustrious glazes, Miyamura’s surfaces possess a stunning and unusual iridescent quality. Stemming from the artist’s interest in rare ancient Chinese tea bowl glazes, Miyamura seeks to create “glazes that have a three dimensional quality, and speak an inner feeling of purity and peacefulness.” His forms can be characterized as classic, calm, and balanced in aesthetic.

 According to the artist:

“I create my own interpretations of classical forms, while trying to achieve a clarity and simplicity of line. I am very conscious of the ways in which a form interacts with the space around it. I want my pieces to feel in balance with their environment, to feel as though they co-exist naturally with their surroundings…. My goal is to try and evoke a feeling of inner peace and tranquility.”

 Miyamura studied and apprenticed with a Japanese master potter for six years, before moving to the US in the early 1990’s. His work can be found in private and public collections around the world, highlights include the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, IL, the Auckland Institute and Museum, New Zealand, the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburg, PA, the Museum of Arts and Design, New York, NY, and the Renwick gallery, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC.
