CHICAGO – Wexler Gallery is pleased to be exhibiting at SOFA Chicago Booth 107 from November 6th-9th at Navy Pier, Festival Hall in Chicago. The world-renowned art fair dedicated to Sculpture, Objects, Functional Art & Design is celebrating its 21st year as the longest continuously running gallery-presented art fair in Chicago.
This year Wexler Gallery will be taking new work by veteran glass artists Dan Dailey and Mark Peiser and a selection of exquisite new, contemporary glass works by Dan Cutrone, Jamie Harris, Joanna Manousis, Amie McNeel, Andy Paiko and Charlotte Potter.
Exceptional secondary market glass by Dale Chihuly, Dan Dailey, Laura de Santillana, Kyohei Fujita, Michael Glancy, Stanislav Libenský and Jaroslava Brychtová, Richard Marquis, William Morris, Judith Schaechter, Paul Stankard, Lino Tagliapietra, Bertil Vallien, Toots Zynsky and vintage glass by the late Harvey Littleton will be on view.
Contemporary design by Vivian Beer and Aswoon/Susan Woods will round out our booth that celebrates innovation and the overlap between art and design.
On Friday, November 7th from 10:30am to 11:30am Wexler Gallery will host a talk with distinguished metal sculptor Albert Paley. Join Albert Paley as he remarks on his recent retrospective survey at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. Paley will cover all aspects of his decorated career from his beginnings as a goldsmith and jeweler to his large-scale sculptural projects. The conversation will take place in the VIP conversation space.
Broadly published and an international lecturer, Albert Paley received both his BFA and MFA from the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia, PA. He received an honorary doctorate from the University of Rochester in 1989. Paley also holds the position of Charlotte Fredericks Mowris Professor in Contemporary Crafts at Rochester Institute of Technology.
Pieces by Albert Paley can be found in the permanent collections of many major museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
On Saturday, November 8th from 12:30-1:30pm Wexler Gallery will host a booth talk with contemporary glass artist Joanna Manousis and art historian William Warmus. The conversation will be held in front on Joanna Manousis’ most recent work The Dominant Sophia and William Warmus will moderate the conversation. Both artist and historian will discuss the ways in which artists are using glass as a medium to redefine the concept of fine art. Manousis’ large installation comprised of solid, clear crystal segments and 24 carat gold mirror creates an inviting dialogue for contemporary glass, marking a moment where metaphor comes to life through the brilliant selection of material.
Holding a Masters of Fine Arts in Sculpture from Alfred University, New York, and a First Class Honors Bachelor Degree in Fine Art from The University of Wolverhampton, England, Joanna Manousis continues to work, study and teach in the United States. Her work can be seen in the permanent collections at Ebeltoft Glass Museet, Denmark and the Cafesjian Center for the Arts, Yerevan, Armenia.
Writer, curator and art historian William Warmus studied art history and philosophy at the University of Chicago. Warmus became the curator of modern glass at The Corning Museum of Glass in 1978, and curated three landmark exhibitions: New Glass, which was also shown at The Metropolitan Museum of Art and at the Louvre; Tiffany’s Tiffany, which focused on the masterpieces Tiffany had in his home and studios; and the first major exhibition in North America of Emile Gallé’s work.
Since leaving the Corning Museum of Glass, Warmus has pursued a career as an independent curator, historian, and appraiser, specializing in modern glass, abstract art, and the aesthetics of the natural environment. The New York Times profiled him as a “Stylemaker,” while the University of Chicago magazine described him as a classical modernist. He is the author of more than a dozen books, including biographies of Tiffany, Lalique, and Chihuly.
Warmus was the editor of Glass Magazine, faculty member and visiting artist at the Pilchuck School of Glass, and executive secretary of the Glass Art Society. He is the recipient of the AACG award for outstanding contributions to contemporary glass. Warmus lives near Ithaca, NY.
